National Hydropower Day – August 24. 2021

Local utilities come together to celebrate the clean, reliable, and affordable power of the Pacific Northwest on National Hydropower Day!

Hydropower powers the Tri-Cities, accounting for more than 75% of the electricity that powers our lives every day. National Hydropower Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the most reliable resource in power that's 100% carbon free.

Benton PUD, Benton REA, Big Bend Electric Cooperative, Franklin PUD, and Richland Energy Services come together to celebrate National Hydropower Day.  For over 75 years, local utilities have been powering our communities.  Access to clean, reliable, and affordable hydropower from our local rivers has been key to sustaining the health, safety, and well-being of the communities we serve.

“Abundant and low-cost hydroelectricity has long been the economic engine of our region,” said Rick Dunn, General Manager of Benton PUD.  “All area utilities want our customers to know the four lower Snake River dams are not surplus, outdated or easily replaced and they need to stay as an important part of clean energy today and into the future.”

Without hydropower from the lower Snake River dams, electricity prices and the risk of blackouts will rise, and we will be taking a step backward in meeting aggressive clean energy goals for our state and the Northwest.
